Songbird

The quill dances over the expensive vellum with supernatural grace. Literally; the force that directs it is a spell rather than a hand. Neatly, it dips into the pot of very expensive purple ink and resumes its motion.

To his most honored excellency Illidan Stormrage, lord of Eldarath Academy and his beloved wife Jentessa, most sincere greetings from Kael’thas, last of the house of Sunstrider.

It is my honor and pleasure to bring you these glad words of tidings. The jewel of my heart, my lovely bride Vaala, has expressed a desire for the company of the equally lovely Lady Stormrage and I, her devoted husband, can but beg your most gracious selves to be guests in our humble home. It is my understanding that the songbird of my life has news that she wishes to deliver personally to the exquisite ear of that pinnacle of motherhood, Jentessa – and I would not be so presumptuous as to ask such an ardent figure of fatherhood to remain behind while the lights of his life travel. To that end I entreat you, Lord and Lady Stormrage, to grace our lives with your presences.

Yours most sincerely,

Kael’thas

A derisive snort alerts Kael that the jewel of his heart is standing right behind him, reading over his shoulder. “Songbird?” The single word manages to convey skepticism for the entire tone of the message.

Unperturbed, her husband uncaps a tiny vial and sprinkles gold dust over the still-wet ink. “I tried calling you my flower once, and I didn’t stop hearing about it for a solid half-hour.” The vellum is carefully lifted and the excess dust poured through a tube of waxed paper back into the vial. “I didn’t mind so much because I think your voice is lovely even when it’s calling me a delusional bleached peacock with sawdust between its ears.”

“Why can’t you just write ‘Come and visit, Vaala wants to talk to Tessa’?”

He turns to face his scowling wife. “Because, my lovely and delicate flower, you asked me to write the letter, and you deserve nothing but the best.”

Vaala opens her mouth to start another half-hour rant, but finds herself silence by the pliant warmth of Kael’s lips. While occasionally loud, the next thirty minutes are most assuredly not spent arguing.
