These are just rough blurbs; I'm open to suggestions or questions or prompts to flesh them out more.

High School all-human AU

ILLIDAN

Blinded in an accident with an industrial chemical over summer vacation. Refuses to talk about it. Emo kid, hair dyed black. Wears black blindfold and black everything else because he can’t see and black matches black. Paints mascara tear streaks on his cheeks. Sits alone and writes poetry about how miserable he is and how much his life sucks, and it’s actually really good…but no one knows because it’s in braille. Has been known to cut himself. Takes public transportation or gets rides from Tyrande. Pushes people away because he’s misdirecting anger and grief at having lost his sight and not being able to be independent. Father was one of the responders, and the first one to find him after the accident. Spends time with Tyrande’s father after school or on weekends, working out his frustrations learning how to sculpt by feel in clay.

MALFURION

Scruffy environmental activist, rants about the evils of pollution and chemicals and large corporations, has started brewing his own alcohol from organic fruit juice. Rides a bicycle. Is misdirecting anger and grief over what happened to his twin because he doesn’t know how to deal with the change in Illidan’s personality. Gets jealous when Tyrande gives Illidan rides. Mother is career military and often away on deployment, father is a paramedic and works 12-hour shifts, so the boys basically got adopted by Tyrande’s parents. Refuses to talk about Illidan’s accident, just rants about evil corporate chemicals.

TYRANDE

Hyper-responsible Student Council President, the type who scores 1560 on her SATs and already has acceptance letters from four Ivy league schools despite not having graduated yet. Will be going into law, like her mother. Drives her mother’s sports car. Took martial arts as a kid and is childhood friends with the Stormrage brothers. Used to eat play-doh with them when they were little. Mother is a big-name prosecutor, father is a derpy fluffy sculptor with a pottery shed and kiln in the backyard. Had his own business but it went under, and mother divorced him just to keep the finances clean. Part of the divorce was that if he can’t get work, she pays him a stipend, and he rents the loft apartment above the garage. Both still love each other, but it’s a little awkward.

ARTHAS

Zip-up grey hoodie with scruffy jeans and unlaced sneakers, black nail polish, and a Nirvana shirt.

KAEL’THAS

Hipster, but doesn’t wear hipster glasses because they’re too mainstream. Father older, remarried a younger, rich, French woman. Just read this book you’ve never heard of…because it’s 500 years old and in French. He really liked this wine you’ve never heard of…because the vineyard only makes three bottled a year. Rides a moped.

VARIAN

Biker punk, black leather jacket with studs, hair waxed into spikes, camo pants and combat boots and fingerless gloves. Rides a Harley. His father was a deadbeat and skipped out on his mom when he was a kid, and they lived borderline-poverty most of his life. Went and hunted his dad down last year and beat a bunch of money out of him, enough for some repairs around the house, and basically took his dad’s motorcycle. His “gang” is other poor white kids, and they inflict violence on anyone mistreating women and children. Mother is being paid by the state to host Thrall.

JAINA

Hardcore oldschool gamer chick, knows how to get a perfect score in Mario Bros. and waxes eloquent on the programming aspect. Critiques game engines and develops hacks. Has an old Honda Accord that she’s retrofitted to run on vegetable oil.

THRALL

Awkward foreign student, got put back a grade because his grasp of English didn’t test well; he comprehends just fine, but he has problems writing, reading, and speaking it. Russian, parents were assassinated and he lives in state-sponsored housing after being granted asylum. Is one of the only people who can follow Jaina when she really gets going. He’s big and burly and gets shunned, so he just hangs around shooting hoops by himself or with Garrosh. Does not have his license. Treats Varian’s mother like a queen, leaps to do chores around the house. Slightly chilly relationship with Varian, who initially assumed that bad English meant disrespecting his mother.

GARROSH

Half-Russian mulatto bully; father is a large black man and physically abusive, mother is Thrall’s mother’s cousin. Calls Illidan ‘Blindrage’. Has a learner’s permit and occasionally drive his father’s battered pickup truck. Argues with Thrall in Russian.

TESSA

Also blind, retinitis pigmentosa, degenerative thing that surgery and medicine can’t stop. She and her parents are Thai, legal aliens. Her father is a surgeon and her mother was an English teacher, but hasn’t found a job in the US yet. She’s a tiny little thing who skipped two grades because she’s very intelligent. Knows braille because what little sight she has left (basically just peripheral vision) will be gone in a year or two.
