Saiyuki was not my first "real" fandom, but it was the first canon to supply me with a muse willing to talk, and Hakkai taught me about emotional torment and the sweet pain of breaking, only to rebuild oneself as something stronger. You will find no yaoi here...yet. Hakkai has way too many self-worth issues, Sanzo's libido carries a sign that reads 'Help help, I'm being repressed!', and Gojyo is hyper-sensitive about going where he's not wanted. For those that are curious however, the Sanzo in this timeline is straight and does eventually meet a spirited priestess that he settles down and has a son with. Goku is uninterested, Gojyo is mostly straight but will take affection where he can get it, and Hakkai loved Kanan so much that he could never love another woman after her death. It just kind of took him a few years to realize that meant he was gay for Gojyo. They worked it out eventually.

This timeline follows Gensomaden Saiyuki and waves cheerfully at the rest of canon as it veers left and never comes back. The pieces here are all from Hakkai's point of view, ranging from the month he spent nameless at Gojyo's to the end of Gensomaden Saiyuki and past that, to the resolution of everything and into a well-deserved retirement. There are some things I didn't get to write out before Hakkai went dormant, like The Mirror Incident and that one time the creepy bastard with the parasite youkai captured them and Hakkai learned how to play dead. Sorry about that. But hey, a decade and a half later and he's back!
