“Is he…?” Tyrande trailed off fearfully, not wanting to say the word.

“No.” Despite the news that Illidan wasn’t dead, none of the tension left Malfurion’s body. “I can feel him. He’s alive. But…” The young druid looked haunted. “He’s…closed off. Something bad is happening to him, Tyrande. He’s shut me out.”

“Why…what would make him do that?”

Nerves already stretched to their limit, Malfurion sniffled once or twice but couldn’t stop the tears trickling down his cheeks. “He did it once before, just after our parents died. I did, too. The pain…the loss…it was too much. Neither of us wanted the other to suffer from feeling the other hurting. But we didn’t hold it for more than a few days. Not feeling each other was terrible.”

“Then whatever they’re doing…” Tyrande took her friend’s hand in both of hers and held tight.

“It’s hurting him so much that he thinks not feeling me is better than me feeling what he’s feeling.”

“We have to do something!”

“No, Tyrande. He wouldn’t want you risking yourself for him. He…” The fledgling druid’s voice broke. “Closing himself off like this. He’s saying…don’t come for me. Don’t worry about me. Don’t…”

The words died in his throat and he bunched his hands into fists, knuckling savagely at his eyes, chest heaving fruitlessly as he struggled to not cry. Tyrande watched quietly, wishing she could provide some kind of comfort. She loved them both dearly, and she’d always known they were close, but until now she hadn’t thought about what each twin meant to the other.

“He’ll get himself out,” Malfurion said thickly, sounding as though he were trying to convince himself of that. “We have to trust him. Maybe…maybe that’s what his eyes mean. He’s always been more clever than me…we just have to give him time. He’ll be back, you’ll see…”

Tyrande’s heart ached. Despite his brave words, Malfurion’s voice held only desperation: not certainty, and not hope. Her thoughts went out to the golden-eyed twin who’d risked his life to spare her whatever he was suffering now, and she wondered if she’d ever see him again.
